Chinese Music

As a Chinese pianist, Yezi has performed many music from Chinese composers. Her selection includes Tan Dun's composition, Zhenmin Xu’s piano solos inspired by ancient Tang poetry, and Yunfei Li's commission work. From XU's writing, these pieces explore the rich textures of Chinese pentatonic scales combined with Impressionist techniques, vividly portraying the poetic imagery. Wind and Sand is a commission work by composer Yunfei Li. It is a suite inspired by paintings of the Xinjiang Uyghur. This work highlights the piano’s percussive capabilities, emulating traditional Uyghur instruments while capturing the essence of the region’s culture and spirit.

Music from Tan Dun

Tan Dun's Hero Violin Sonata, Banquet Sonata and Eight Memories in Watercolor, Op.1 blend Chinese tradition with contemporary music. The Hero Violin Sonata features a melody inspired by Peking Opera, while the Banquet Sonata evokes the tensions of the imperial court with its pentatonic scale. Eight Memories in Watercolor uses dynamic tones and contrast to capture the essence of Chinese ink painting. These works showcase Tan Dun's ability to musically translate images into acoustic melodies.
