Dr. Chen's Mission and Goals

I aim to inspire and motivate students to achieve their best, guiding them through an enjoyable and efficient learning process. My goal is to cultivate a love for music, creativity, and confidence across various styles. I help students become confident, spontaneous, and communicative in various musical styles while providing top-quality piano education and sharing my passion for music.

Lesson Structure

  • Beginners: Introduction to music notations, rhythms, articulations, and basic techniques. Students learn introductory repertoire with simple melodies and accompaniment.

  • Intermediate: In-depth study of intermediate piano repertoire, including music theory, music history, and various musical genres such as classical, jazz, and popular music. Focus on techniques, sound production, and musical expressions.

  • Advanced: Advanced piano repertoire exploration, including musical styles, interpretations, textures, and historical contexts. Technical challenges are addressed, and artistic confidence is developed.

Performance Opportunities

Students will have opportunities to perform in at least two recitals per year, one at the end of each semester. All students are highly encouraged to participate in recitals, auditions, music festivals, and competitions in this area, including:

  • Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival

  • PMTA Keystone Concerto Festival

  • MTNA Competition

  • Achievement Awards Auditions

  • Musikfest

  • Frank Chesebro Memorial Scholarship Competition

  • Metropolitan Opera Field Trip

Student/Parent Responsibilities

  • Punctuality and preparedness are expected from students. Students are responsible for bringing their music materials to their lesson.

  • Regular practice is essential: beginners (15-30 minutes/day), intermediate (more than 30 minutes/day), advanced (at least 45 minutes/day).

  • Piano students need a piano or 88 weighted-key keyboard at home.

  • Parents are strongly encouraged to observe quietly and take notes during their children's private lessons. Parental presence during private lessons significantly impacts the success and enthusiasm of young students over time.

Tuition and Monthly Payment

Tuition fees include the careful lesson plans for the weekly individualized lessons. Varies pricing options are offered based on lesson length, frequency, and level.

  • Monthly Payment Requirement: At the start of each calendar month, students are required to ensure a balance on their account equivalent to four (4) weekly lessons in advance.  Depending on the number of lessons completed in the previous month, the required payment might be for fewer than or for more than four (4) lessons.  In other words, unused balances and balances in arrears carry over.

  • Payment Due Date: Payment for the upcoming month's lessons must be received no later than the first lesson of that month.

  • Late Payments: Any payments received after the due date incur a late fee of $25.

Referrals

Current students who successfully refer new students to Dr. Chen will receive one free lesson for each successful referral. The free lesson will be credited to your student balance.

Absence Policy

  • Lessons canceled by the instructor will be rescheduled.

  • Rescheduling is accepted with at least 48 hours of notice. Failure to give notice (48 hours ahead) results in the lesson not being made up and the student will be charged for the missed lesson.

  • If you need to take a long-term leave from lessons, we cannot hold your spot as there are other students on a waiting list for lessons.

  • There are no make-ups for make-ups. If you are scheduled for a make-up lesson that you do not attend for any reason, there will not be another scheduled.

Instructional Time

  • We value our time with you and look forward to seeing you each week!

  • You will receive 29-30 minutes of instructional time per 30-minute time slot.

  • If you are late, you will receive a short lesson with the time that remains in your lesson slot.

  • For in-person lessons, the waiting room is available where you can wait for the teacher to greet you for your lesson.  Parents are welcome to wait in the waiting area during lessons or quietly observe and take notes for young students.

  • During online lessons for young children, one parent may wish to be present to facilitate and be a silent guide on the side.
